Types of Braces
“Types of braces?” you may be asking yourself. “Since when has there been more than one type?”
When many of our patients first visit us, they have no idea how many different types of braces there are. The days when only traditional metal braces were available are long gone. While these braces do still exist, they are nothing like they were in the past, having radically changed over the last two decades, and there are plenty of other choices Dr. Katz can work with. If you need braces in New York City, read below to learn more about the types of braces we offer New York City.
Invisalign is the ultimate in terms of aesthetic treatment options. We use custom-molded, clear trays to move your teeth to their ideal position. Because they are removable, patient compliance is extremely important with aligners, so we only use them with patients we feel can be responsible on their own or have plenty of family support. Invisalign is a terrific option for working professionals or patients seeking a discreet solution to improve their smile.
This is the Invisalign option designed specifically for teens. Worried about having metal braces for prom, yearbook photos, or playing sports? Invisalign clear aligners are virtually invisible and most people do not even notice them. Since they are removable, you can eat what you want without any worry of breaking a bracket or rubber band. Not only are the aligners removable, they are very durable. Invisalign Teen is much like the regular Invisalign system, but also comes with an indicator system so the user knows if the aligners have been worn long enough, as well as with replacement aligners should a few get lost along the way.
We offer traditional metal braces to treat crowded or spaced teeth, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Depending on your case and the treatment plan Dr. Katz will prescribe, other appliances may be used along with braces to improve the position of your teeth. While they are a traditional option, they are still one of the best choices for treating more severe orthodontic problems.
Clear braces use either clear or ceramic brackets. Damon Clear is the system we use for clear brackets, which are nearly invisible to those around you. Ceramic braces use tooth-colored brackets that blend into your teeth, reducing their visibility, making them a good alternative to clear braces.
If you are not comfortable with the look of traditional metal braces but require their effective treatment, the Damon System is a potential solution. This self-ligating system reduces the components needed for treatment, which in turn reduces the visibility of the appliance. This system is highly effective and loved by many of our patients.
Finally, we offer lingual braces, which are placed on the tongue side of the teeth concealing them from view. It is nearly impossible for anyone to see them. They take longer to adjust to than regular braces since they get between your tongue and your teeth, but you will adjust soon enough.
